Omni’s Future: A Community Effort

Omni has always been about creating a home for the social dance community, and for three years, we’ve worked hard to build that space.

But Omni is also a business. Rent must be paid. The lights don’t keep themselves on.

Historically, Omni has not been profitable, and in recent months, our financial challenges have worsened. This threatens the school’s stability and its ability to continue serving the community.

In response, we considered transitioning to nonprofit status. Over the past few months, we spoke with investors, staff, and you—our community—to explore whether this path could help secure Omni’s future.

After careful consideration, we have decided not to pursue nonprofit status. Here’s why:

  • Community Over Legal Structure

Omni’s identity isn’t defined by whether it’s a for-profit or a nonprofit. What matters is that it exists, remains mission-driven, and continues putting the community first.

As one community member put it:

“I’ve seen nonprofits that were exploitative and for-profits that brought tremendous value. The legal structure is just a vehicle—it doesn’t define the culture of the organization.”

  • There Are Other Paths to Financial Stability

The real issue isn’t the business model—it’s that Omni is losing money each month. A nonprofit model would allow tax-deductible donations, but it also comes with administrative burdens and a loss of ownership. After reviewing our options, Omni’s board believes we have viable ways to stabilize the school without restructuring.

How you can help:

One immediate solution is to offer members the opportunity to pay upfront for 6 or 12 months of membership.

In February, our goal is to raise $20,000 through upfront membership payments. More details on this initiative will be shared soon.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email us or use our anonymous feedback form.

Omni exists because of you. Let’s work together to keep this home for dance thriving.
